I want to take a minute to welcome you to Sikhs Doing Things. You’re reading this on our About page which means, you’re probably thinking stuff like “what is this website,” “what does it do,” “why was it created”.. ect.
Let’s take a moment to talk about what led to me creating it.
Growing up in America, other than inside our home where our parents kept our background instilled in us, I faced issues connecting with the culture my parents grew up with. Even though us siblings mostly spoke English with one another, our method of communicating with our parents was still through Punjabi.
My circle of friends was extremely diverse and included very few Sikhs. Not that it was a bad thing but it certainly wasn’t by choice. It would be nice to have some more Sikhs in my group because those folks are most relatable given the shared culture and background. The truth is that there aren’t very many Sikhs in the World… let alone in countries like the United States. Out of a population of about 365 million people, there are an estimated 500,000 which equates to just 0.14% of the population. That’s right, less than 1/7th of a percent. And even these numbers are not confirmed. We need a way to find each other when locally is just not enough.
Another major reason I wanted to create this platform was that I’ve realized over the years that Sikhs do seva because it’s part of who they are and because it’s the right thing to do… but rarely help each other when in need. There are countless Sikhs who are poor and struggling in Punjab. There are countless Sikhs who make their way to the western world looking for work and success. A lot of the successful Sikhs turn a blind eye to them like they themselves were never in that position. Other successful Sikh business owners hide trade secrets like there isn’t enough for all of us to thrive on. If we aren’t there to help each other, who else can we rely on? We need to focus on building each other up when the world is trying to tear us apart.
